Michael Jackson's unbelievable talent inspires me very much. it makes me laugh when i see him dance, just like i laugh at a vinnie or dave lick because michael is soo rhythmic. he body is like a whole band.....his voice can be so percussive. he is a genius!!!

victor wooten is another wonderful talent and person.

-Zappa
-'Trane (the sickest use of the enormous technique to make music on a completely different level... he reminds me of a freight train, unstoppable; he just rams the music down your throat in such an elegant way.
-Wayne Shorter (great technique but the tunes he wrote were what i really dig).
-Aretha Franklin (i wish i could play drums with that kind of attitude!)

-Ben Harper
-Carlos Santana

Laura Nyro, who at a very young age composed, played piano, and sang her own music, which ranged in styles from jazz, blues, classical, broadway, R&B, Gospel, pop etc... And was the first artist to overdub her own backing vocals. And who, in the late sixties, was the 2nd most covered songwriter--the Beatles were number 1.
I can honestly say she was one of the most important pop artists of the last quarter century. Just listen to Eli and the 13th Confession from '68, and wonder how a 19 year old could do something of that caliber, or if you can handle it, New York Tendabery.
She is the most overlooked artist I can think of.

If I could only pick one, it would have to be Sting. He was the singer in my first "favorite band" and through his music I was led to so many great players when I didn't even realize who there were yet. (Vinnie)
